The current Project: Patriotprison (Five years and 6 months) – Nolan’s current project interrogates the symbol of a countries flag and the different meanings a symbol can hold relative to the subjective viewpoint. Nolan challenges the imprisonment of David Hicks, with ‘Five years and 6 months’ title of the work relating to the term of imprisonment of Australian citizen David Hicks. The initiating factors contributing to the creation of the artwork are; the American-Australian relationship, detention without trial, the privacy ‘big brother’ George Orwellian ‘1984’ aspect of surveillance, the use of drones in combat, and the employment of, or link to patriotism as a mechanism to affect an agenda.
