‘Aireys Inlet’ – Jonathan Nolan, 2015, Oil on canvas, 50cm x 120cm

A weekend away to Aireys inlet with the camera in hand resulted in shots of a beautiful golden orange sun drenched coastline. Cutting its way to the sea with reflections of sky pushing light blues and whites into a sand alive with texture and colour. The sea spray rises where the bluff and outcrop collide with the sea.

The work is painterly applied with a pallet knife and large brushes in the early development. The colours in this painting are predominantly earth tones with yellow and orange highlights.

On display to July 2016 at the Tussock Gallery upstairs at Point Lonsdale, Victoria.

‘Southbank study’ – Jonathan Nolan, 2016, Oil on canvas,

As part of an Urban Grey tone workshop with artist David Chen I have attempted a copy of one of David’s paintings of Southbank in the rain. The aim of the study is to learn to blend the blue buildings into the sky in the background.

I will be around Southbank with the Camera over the next few weeks, looking to capture the cityscape after a sun shower for a larger original work.

‘Sydney Harbor from Mossman’ Jonathan Nolan 2014, Oil on canvas

Painted from the same perspective as an Arthur Streeton painting by the same name circa 1926. This landscape study was completed in two sittings, using a simple impressionist palette. The city was removed and mountains added and it became another place.

‘Sick Bacchus’ 2014 Oil on Canvas (Not for Sale)

This portrait of Bacchus the god of wine is a study based on the Michelangelo Merisi de Caravaggio painting, ‘Bacchus, god of wine’ 1593.

This painting was completed to study the human form, the technique of glazing to tie the colour palette together. This painting incorporates the use of transparent glazes tinted with viridian to add harmony to the palette and also to give the effect of a sickness. The painting was completed in four sittings and a number of glazed layers.

‘A Temporal Port – Queenscliff’ 2015, Oil on canvas (50cm x 120cm)

The inspiration for this painting came from a photograph of the Couta boats returning to the Queenscliff port (circa 1910). That combined with my first hand experience of the redevelopment of the Queenscliff port area led to this painting being created in a pointillist style. I chose pointillism to represent this scene as the style promotes an interaction as the viewer mixes the painting with their own eye to form the end result the same way the people interact with the changing site. The painting depicts an early 20th century scene with the Couta boats returning to port, but against the modern redevelopment, all depicted in a late 19th century post-impressionist painting style.

On display to July 2016 at the Tussock Gallery upstairs at Point Lonsdale, Victoria.

‘Self Portrait, 2014’ Jonathan Nolan 2014, Oil on Canvas (Not for Sale)

My self portrait came about in an unplanned, spontaneous way, my own image appearing as I experimented with the base layers of portrait using a new palette and an open mind.

The Edited Ambassadors

An adaptation of Holbein’s 1650 painting titled ‘the Ambassadors.’ This painting depicts the meeting of two ambassadors with symbols of discord embedded in the work. I have digitally edited the work to change the ambassadors to be Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The inspiration for this work was born out of the diplomatic tension evident in dialogue between the two nations.

‘The View from Will and Prue’s’ Jonathan Nolan, 2013 Oil on Canvas (Sold)

This landscape oil painting is an impression of a mountain range, facing east from Lahara in the Grampians, Victoria. It is a beautiful sight to see the sun set on the hills behind the house. I have tried to capture this with a painterly applied rich orange and cadmium red. I glazed only sections of the cliffs to accentuate the rich colour. This is my first real endeavor into the colour palette of the Australian bush.

‘Grey Tone Cityscape – Japan’  – Jonathan Nolan, 2016, Oil on canvas, (Sold)

As part of an Urban Grey tone workshop with artist David Chen I have developed this work from a photograph of a Tokyo street.

This work uses complex grey tones in oil paint. The painting method includes three or more pigments in every colour used. The end result should be tonally similar, i.e if you look at it in black and white there is no large value contrast.
